Jacmel is a city located on the southern coast of Haiti, specifically in the southeastern department. To this day, the city is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and rich historical heritage, as well as its carnival, one of the most famous in the Caribbean. Jacmel is one of the oldest cities in Haiti. Its origins, according to some historians, trace back to the time of the Taíno people, the island’s first inhabitants, who lived here long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and his settlers in 1492. Long before it became Jacmel, this city in southeastern Haïti was called Yakimel. The renaming of Jacmel was carried out by the French during their colonization of the western part of the island of Hispaniola. Over the years, Jacmel has transformed into a city where living well blends with the beauty of the sea, in the hearts of its visitors. Nature is fully embraced here, and the sea remains a source of joy throughout the day. Jacmel offers all of this, in addition to its glorious past, which anchors it as a major location in Haiti’s grand history. In the 1950s and 60s, until the early 1980s, Jacmel was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean due to its reputation as a city with unmatched natural beauty and grace. During this time, the Jacmel coastline warmly welcomed cruise ships filled with tourists from all corners of the world. It was also during this period that Jacmel was one of the most commercially active cities in Haiti, among the country’s most economically flourishing, thanks to the significant influx of tourists.

Letter to My Favorite Author: An Initiative by CSimon Publishing and the Port-au-Prince Book Fair

The "Letter to My Favorite Author" contest is a joint initiative by CSmon Publishing, a publishing house based in Virginia, USA, and the Port-au-Prince Book Fair. The contest aims to create a platform where young literature enthusiasts can express their affection and admiration for the authors who have impacted their lives through a letter dedicated to them. This letter can be written in Haitian Creole or French by any young person aged 18 to 30 living in Haiti. The author to whom the letter is addressed can be Haitian or foreign, and even from the medieval period. The contest began on January 27, with registration closing on that date, and will continue until April 15, when the prizes will be awarded. The awards, which are 75,000 gourdes for the winner, 50,000 gourdes for the second place, and 25,000 gourdes for third place, will be presented during the event "Living in Prose and Poetry," organized annually by the Port-au-Prince Book Fair, to be held in 2025 at the French Institute in Haiti.

Jean Wood Jude, known as a silent poet, releases his very first collection of Poems.

Born in Port-au-Prince on October 10, 2001, Jean Wood Jude is a young 23-year-old Haitian poet/slammer. His talent and determination in the pursuit of his poetic passion have allowed him to serve the cause of poetry and to be one of the best-known figures in the Haitian poetic world thanks to short videos broadcast on social networks. Apart from his artistic and literary activity, Jean Wood Jean is a student in social communication at the Faculty of Human Sciences (FASCH) within the State University of Haiti. Better known under the nickname Silent Poet, he has more than 200,000 followers on his social networks, and regularly publishes poems in French and Creole. The release of his collection entitled “waltz of a silent heart or Pantalèt Kè m” will only confirm the talent of this young artist.

Sandra Dessalines, creating to testify her freedom

Sandra Dessalines is a self-taught Haitian painter, sculptor, and visual artist. She was born in Port-au-Prince but grew up in the commune of Carrefour. Today, she is an ambassador who brings Haitian culture to life through her art all over the world, particularly in France, where she has lived for more than a decade. An Honorable Journey Sandra Dessalines trained as an agricultural engineer at Quisqueya University in Port-au-Prince and continued her studies at INSA in Toulouse, France. Her official entry into the world of art came after the devastating earthquake that ravaged her homeland, Haiti, on January 12, 2010. This event pushed her towards art, allowing her to reach the level she occupies today. In terms of recognition, Sandra Dessalines has made a name for herself, with her original style, inspired by her native Haiti, gaining increasing recognition from major event organizers in Paris. In October 2024, she even received the public prize at Lmh Concept Events Art and Design for their 10th anniversary in Paris. This award perfectly reflects the originality of her work and her ability to touch people’s hearts through her creation.

Living in Prose and Poetry: an unmissable summer event in Port-au-Prince.

Living in Prose and Poetry is an artistic and cultural event organized by the cultural organization Salon de Livre de Port-au-Prince (OCSLPAP) with the aim of bringing together young artists from the Haitian capital to exhibit them to a large audience . This edition will take place on Saturday July 27, 2024, at the pyépoudré cultural center, located at number 332 on the Route de Bourne. This year the organizers announce their mission is to bring together talents from various categories of arts, always with the aim of helping them to become familiar with each other, and to help create a solid link between them and the Haitian public. . The categories targeted by the organizers for this second edition are young poets, slammers, comedians, rappers, dancers, singers, painters, and writers who have already published at least one work. Living in prose and poetry will also be an opportunity to encourage Haitian youth to think. The first part of the event will be devoted to a discussion around a text by the famous Haitian writer Louis Philippe Dalembert, entitled The Other Face of the Sea. It is a novel which carefully addresses the subject of immigration and detachment that goes with it in the immigrant’s skin. It is a book that speaks openly to the reality of the Haitian people today. It has already been announced that this first part will be moderated by the journalist and literary critic Carl Pierrecq who works for the short story writer, and moderation will be provided by Pierre Marie, a young sociology student at the Faculty of Human Sciences (FASCH). After a largely successful first edition which took place in May 2023 in the premises of the municipal library of Delmas, the organizers of living in prose and poetry say they are determined and have made the promise for this year to deliver to the public port-au -princien, a cultural event of exceptional scale for the second outing. Once again, this will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the great richness of Haitian culture through the organs of our young talents. Given the difficult context, manifested by the almost daily situation of insecurity which has prevailed for some time, in a good part of Port-au-Prince, the announcement of this event comes as a fresh breath of oxygen, scattered throughout the within the lungs of the city. It is yet another opportunity to remind through this artistic festivity that even in times of deep unrest, art will remain an indispensable light, because even in times of crisis, the latter and the artist (its channel of diffusion) will become refuges, sources of comfort and appeasement for all human souls.

PAQÉMO, music in the Service of Education and Hope in Haiti

PAQÉMO, short for "Projet Artistique de Quartiers et Éducatif Musical en Orchestre" (Neighborhood Artistic and Educational Orchestral Music Project), is an ambitious initiative launched in 2022 by the Association Musicale et Éducative à Vocation Sociale (AMEVS), co-founded by Jéricho Pierre-Noël and Cecilia Madolena Clénard, Haitian students at Sorbonne University. Today, the project includes other names such as Sargine Any Melissa Bernard, Mohamed Etamine, Ege Tarik Eken, Youssef Naccache, and Sohann List Massaregli, all Sorbonne students dedicated to promoting access to musical education in Haiti—particularly classical music—as a tool for holistic development. The goal of PAQÉMO’s founders is to use music as a means of education, inclusion, and social transformation, integrated alongside the traditional Haitian school curriculum.
